Team Maryland opened the new year with a two-game series sweep against the Philadelphia Junior Flyers. The first game of 2019 for Team Maryland resulted in a 5-4 victory on January 5th that came down to a shootout. Jakub Hasek led the offensive charge with two goals during regulation. Savane Kisich and Alek Nigro were also part of the scoring party, scoring one goal each. Team Maryland Goalie Anthony Del Tufo was the defensive hero of the game. Del Tufo recorded a mind-blowing 60 saves out of the 64 shots posted by the Junior Flyers. Haskek continued his offensive domination in the shootout and clinched the game with the sole dagger.
On January 6th, Team Maryland completed the series sweep of the Junior Flyers with a 3-2 overtime win. The regulation scoring came from Nick Simisir in the first period with assists from Mac Brice and Connor Redden and Mac Brice with assists from Lucas Farinacci and Jakub Hasek. Hasek continued his hot streak in overtime and scored the game-winning goal for the second day in a row. Once again, Anthony Del Tufo was the defensive MVP. Del Tufo defused the Junior Flyers onslaught by deflecting 52 of their 54 shots.
Del Tufo continues his exceptional play during the 2018-19 season. The netminder totaled a whopping 112 saves in two games for a .949 SV%. Del Tufo has already proven he is an NAHL caliber goalie with his spot start for the Maryland Black Bears.
“I’m very proud of the way the guys competed all weekend,” said head Coach Jason Rowe. “We faced some adversity, but we kept pressing on. Del Tufo was outstanding in net both games. This group is really starting to gel and pull together for each other and I’m really excited to get the second half of the season rolling.”
Team Maryland has shown great improvement as 2019 begins and it is not going unnoticed. Many teams around the EHL have praised Team Maryland’s play and the coaching leadership from Head Coach Jason Rowe.
Team Maryland plays again on January 13th against the Seahawks Hockey Club in the Rodman Arena at 7:30 PM.
