TM Announces Midget Head Coaches

By TM Staff, 04/09/18, 4:30PM EDT

“Team Maryland has been diligently rebuilding our Midget Program over the past few season, both adding teams and bringing in new coaches.  With one ‘big’ hire a year for the last three seasons, TM now sports a Midget coaching line-up that ranks amongst the elites.  I’m confident with Chris’ leadership and our coaching lineup this season we are ready to take our program to the next level.” Executive Director Mike Weiss.

Team Maryland is pleased and excited to announce this year’s Midget coaches: U18 Head Coach Shawn Grant, U16 Head Coach Chris Ceransky, and U15 Head Coach Matt Reid.

Shawn Grant is entering his second year with Team Maryland.  Coach Grant enjoyed a very successful first season as the Co-Head Coach of the U16 & U18 teams with current Hockey Director Chris Ceransky.  In just one year Shawn has already led his teams to three Championship games.

Prior to joining the TM Family, Grant worked as an Assistant Coach for Clarkson University men’s team for 5 seasons and 2 seasons with Clarkson’s women’s team (current National Champions).  Grant’s additional collegiate coaching experience include one season as the Assistant Men’s Hockey Coach at Neumann College, one season as the Assistant Women’s Hockey Coach at SUNY Potsdam, and two seasons as the Assistant Men’s Hockey Coach at SUNY Potsdam.  Grant also coached youth hockey in his hometown of Potsdam, NY for seven years, which included helping lead the Potsdam Icestorm U16 girls team to back-to-back State Championships (2013 & 2014) and finished 2nd at USA Nationals in 2013 and 3rd at the USA Nationals in 2014.

Grant left Potsdam, NY his senior year of high school and attended Northwood School (Lake Placid, NY) for two years.  During his post-graduate year, Grant was voted by coaches and players as an Assistant Captain and was voted as MVP of the team.  During his postgraduate year, Grant also travelled and played Jr. B for the Char-Lan Rebels (Williamstown, ON).  Following that season, Grant played Jr. A for the Cornwall Colts (Cornwall, ON).  Grant was recruited and lived his lifelong dream to play NCAA Division 1 for Clarkson University in his hometown where he played with current U15 coach, Matt Reid.   During the 1998-1999 season, Grant set the school record for most wins by a Freshman goaltender (25), won the ECAC regular season championship, and posted his career high of 46 saves in the team’s 3-2 win over arch rival St. Lawrence University in the ECAC Championship game in front of 8,469 fans in Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY.  It was the second largest crowd for a hockey game in the arena trailing the USA vs Russia 1980 Olympic game.  During his freshman season, Grant was voted Clarkson’s Rookie-of-the-Year and was named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team.

Grant graduated from Clarkson University in 2002 with B.S. in Management Information Systems and a minor in Telecommunications.  Grant is a certified Level 4 USA Hockey coach as well as a certified Level 1 USA Hockey referee.

Coach Ceransky just finished up his second season with TM serving as the Midget Director and Head Coach of both the U16 & U18 teams.  Chris has coached three midget teams here in two years and has seen plenty of success highlighted by a PVAHA Championship, two AYHL Championship games, an ECEL Championship game, three births to the Southeast District Championship, and one of his goaltenders (Dom Basse) committing to play Division I hockey.  Ceransky was recently promoted to Hockey Director of Team Maryland.

Prior to joining TM, Ceransky served three years in the North American Hockey League as an Assistant Coach for the Wichita Falls Wildcats (Wichita Falls, TX) and then the Coulee Region Chill (La Crosse, WI). During his time in the NAHL, Ceransky established himself in the elite ranks of player development. In just three years, over 60 of his players have or will shortly make the jump to NCAA hockey, including all six of his goaltenders, and worked his way into the 100 win club. Ceransky has also trained six players selected to their respective National teams.  He continues to independently scout for NAHL & USHL.

Before his time in the NAHL, Ceransky spent eight years as a coach and Midget Director with the New Jersey Renegades youth hockey club.  Ceransky was instrumental in founding the organization’s junior team to compete in the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League (Tier III), spending five years as the Renegades’ head coach and assistant general manager, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017. Ceransky was also named the Hockey Director for Next Level hockey, a hockey specific training facility, before leaving for Wichita Falls.

Coach Ceransky has a proven track record for developing young student athletes and Team Maryland is excited to have him at the helm and take the program to new heights.

Matt brings with him an impressive playing background having played for the US National Team at U-16 and U-17 representing the US in Germany and Japan. Reid was selected by the Ottawa 67’s in the OHL Priority Selection Draft but chose to attend Northwood Prep where he committed to Clarkson University (NCAA-D-I).  Matt played with current TM coach Shawn Grant at both Northwood and Clarkson, where they won an ECAC Championship together in 1999.

After his college career Matt received a contract in the Washington Capitals Organization where he played for the Portland Pirates and then went on to play Pro Hockey in Europe.  Following his return to the United States, Matt played 4 seasons with Hershey Bears and South Carolina Stingrays.  During his professional playing career Matt was a part of 4 Championship teams, received numerous team MVP and Offensive awards, and was coached by several current NHL coaches.

After his playing career, Matt settled down in Charleston, South Carolina where he’s compiled a record of 56-11-4 with 3 state championships and 3 Coach of the year awards at the high school Level.

Please welcome Matt Reid, his wife Laurie, and 2 more dogs to the TM family—Grace and Harvey!
