Team Maryland is pleased to announce the addition of Matt Reid to Team Maryland as a Head Coach in the midget program and the clubs Skills Director.
“We could not be happier to bring Matt in to be a member of our family. His playing and coaching background speaks for itself, but for me there are intangibles that make people great. Strengthening the organizational culture that I have started with our midget program is paramount, and there was no better candidate to help us continue that than Matt Reid." Hockey Director Chris Ceransky.
Matt brings with him an impressive playing background having played for the US National Team at U-16 and U-17 representing the US in Germany and Japan. Reid was selected by the Ottawa 67’s in the OHL Priority Selection Draft but chose to attend Northwood Prep where he committed to Clarkson University (NCAA-D-I). Matt played with current TM coach Shawn Grant at both Northwood and Clarkson, where they won an ECAC Championship together in 1999.
"Having played against Matt growing up in Northern New York, as well as teammates at Northwood School and Clarkson University, I saw first-hand the skill, speed, hockey sense, physicality, accountability, and hard work that he embodied. I'm very excited to welcome Matt and Laurie to the Team Maryland family, and I'm confident that Matt's experiences as a player and coach will be big assets in helping develop better players, that are accountable on and off the ice." Coach Shawn Grant
After his college career Matt received a contract in the Washington Capitals Organization where he played for the Portland Pirates and then went on to play Pro Hockey in Europe. Following his return to the United States, Matt played 4 seasons with Hershey Bears and South Carolina Stingrays. During his professional playing career Matt was a part of 4 Championship teams, received numerous team MVP and Offensive awards, and was coached by several current NHL coaches.
“The addition of Matt Reid continues the positive trend of TM investing in high level coaching.” says Mike Weiss, Executive Director of Team Maryland. “Two seasons ago we brought on Chris Ceransky who was coaching in one of the best junior leagues in the country (NAHL) and last season Shawn Grant who had playing and coaching experience at the NCAA DI Level. We’re excited about Matt’s coaching pedigree and as skills director he will work with all of our athletes from Peewees through Midgets.”
After his playing career, Matt settled down in Charleston, South Carolina where he’s compiled a record of 56-11-4 with 3 state championships and 3 Coach of the year awards at the high school Level.
“I am honored and excited to join Team Maryland this upcoming season. I’ve been very fortunate to be be able to travel the world playing this great game. I’ve had great coaching throughout my career, which has made a tremendous impact in my life. I grew up in the small town of Massena NY, which revolves around hockey. I’ve always had a passion for the game,” says Matt, “I believe in hard work and accountability and I’m very excited to bring any knowledge I have to offer to Team Maryland”
Please welcome Matt Reid, his wife Laurie, and 2 more dogs to the TM family—Grace and Harvey!
