Horacek and Ceransky to Head 2021 Midget Teams

By TM Staff, 04/04/20, 3:15PM EDT

Team Maryland is proud to announce that both Tony Horacek (15U & 16U) and Chris Ceransky (18U) will lead our Midget Premier teams. As most of you know, Team Maryland worked diligently over past couple years to build direct affiliations with the top Junior Hockey leagues.  We are now one of the only youth hockey programs with a direct affiliation to a team at all three tiers of U.S. junior hockey.  With such a strong connection to the next level it is important to have Head Coaches who have the experience, connections, and qualifications to teach, prepare, and promote our players.

“Team Maryland takes a lot of pride in our coaching staff and we’re extremely fortunate to have Chris and Tony at the top of the lineup again this year.  Chris has put a ton of effort into building the Junior Prep team and I see that team becoming one of the top places to play on the east coast with our players getting unparalleled opportunities,” says Executive Director, Mike Weiss. “What Tony did in his first year speaks for itself, I’m excited to see him take over the 2005 group and what the 2004 group does for an encore.”

Tony Horacek to Coach U15 & U16 National

With over 20 years of coaching experience at the Professional, Collegiate, Junior, and youth levels, Tony first season with TM was a big success.  U15s earned their first AYHL Championship and the U16s as the 28th ranked team in the country after not fielding a U15 the previous season.  Throughout his coaching career, Horacek has been instrumental in developing and preparing his players for the next level. Tony’s alumni have played at virtually all levels of the game NCAA (DI & DIII), U.S. Juniors (USHL, NAHL, and Tier III), Canadian Provincial Jr leagues (BCHL SJHL OJHL), and even Major Junior and professional hockey.

"I’m very excited to be back with TM for the 2020-21 season. I’m looking forward to coaching our program again this season and continuing to progress our athletes in their careers.  Both teams had a lot of success and we also had close to 20 players from both teams practice with NAHL and USHL teams, of which two athletes played for the Youngstown phantoms in a league game.  If you want to be a hockey player, have big dreams and are willing to invest in your development and prepared for the challenge of competing with the best, Team Maryland is the place to help you reach those goals." stated Horacek.

During his playing career which spanned fifteen seasons between the NHL, IHL and AHL, the seventh-round draft pick played 250 regular season NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks. Horacek was a member of the Stanley Cup finalist team in Chicago.  Prior to playing professionally, Horacek played Major Jr for the Spokane Chiefs, Kelowna Wings, and Kamloops Blazers of the WHL.  He was part of a memorial cup final team as a Kamloops Blazer player.

Horacek apprenticed and learned his craft under the some highly revered Coaches, General Manager’s, and players.  Some of the leaders that Coach Tony had the honor to learn from are: Ken Hitchcock (St. Louis, Philadelphia, Dallas, Edmonton), Andy Murray (Western Michigan University, LA Kings),  Mike Keenan (Chicago, Philadelphia St Louis NHL), Mike Eaves (Hershey Bears, Wisconsin University),  Darryl Sutter (Calgary Chicago Los Angeles NHL),  and numerous others.

Hockey Director Chris Ceransky to Lead 18U Junior Prep

Ceransky is entering his 3rd year as Team Maryland Hockey Director and 5th with the club.  In the past two seasons, under his direction, TM has grown to eight teams and has won 3 AYHL Championships.  In addition, Chris has helped expand Team Maryland’s affiliation with Junior Hockey.  He holds a position at every tier of junior hockey in the United States; Assistant Coach of the Team Maryland EHL team, Scout with the Maryland Blackbears NAHL team, and Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Youngstown Phantoms USHL team.

Chris has coached five midget teams in four years and has seen plenty of success highlighted by multiple PVAHA Championships, two AYHL Championship games, an ECEL Championship game, five births to the Southeast District Championship, coaches three league All-Star teams, one USAH Nationals appearance and two of his recent players (Dom Basse and Bryce Montgomery) committing to play Division I hockey.

"God has blessed me a second beautiful family here with Team Maryland.  Not only am I blessed with an opportunity to affect the game and life of young athletes every day, but I am surrounded by people who have welcomed me into their life with open arms.  I'm excited to continue to grow our new TM culture and personally get better every day.  I can't wait to get on the ice with my new players.  We are going to bleed passion and enthusiasm and show the entire club what it takes to be a Team Maryland hockey player," exclaimed Ceransky.

Prior to joining Team Maryland, Ceransky served three years in the North American Hockey League as an Assistant Coach for the Wichita Falls Wildcats (Wichita Falls, TX) and then the Coulee Region Chill (La Crosse, WI). During this time, Ceransky established himself in the elite ranks of player development and worked his way into the 100-win club. In a coaching world where you are measured by your ability to get players to the next level, Ceransky’s numbers speak for themselves.  43 Division I commitments, 28 Division III commitments, 18 Players to the USHL or Major Junior, 11 players to the pro level, and 6 players to national team selections.
