We are very happy with our Pee-wee staff for the upcoming season. Both men have a great temperament for the age group and have a great background developing younger players. We are confident they are the perfect duo to prepare our Pee-wee’s for the rigor of Tier I hockey.
The youngest age group at Team Maryland is our Pee-wee’s (2009 & 2008 birthyears) so naturally they hold a very special place in our heart. We get to see the first moments of so many fantastic kid’s AAA careers, and if we are very lucky, we get to enjoy those moments with them for many years. With the creation of our new development ladder from Pee-wee all the way to Juniors, a player could wear a Team Maryland family (Team Maryland Youth, Team Maryland EHL, Maryland Blackbears, and Youngstown Phantoms) jersey from the age of ten all the way to twenty-one.
The Pee-wee age level is instrumental in the skill development, personal growth, and culture building for all our young athletes. With that in mind we are proud to officially announce Mike Bazzone as the Pee-wee Minor Head Coach and Pedro Perrella as the Pee-wee Major Head Coach.
“We are very happy with our Pee-wee staff for the upcoming season. Both men have a great temperament for the age group and have a great background developing younger players. We are confident they are the perfect duo to prepare our Pee-wee’s for the rigor of Tier I hockey,” Executive Director Mike Weiss.
Coach Perrella is a great example to all the kids that play here at Team Maryland. He paid his dues and worked his way up from the bottom, spending years as an assistant coach. If you put in enough humble hard work, your efforts are bound to yield fruit.
Pedro Perrella returns to Team Maryland for his ninth season. Coach Perrella started with Team Maryland as Coach Weiss’s assistant at the Pee-wee Major level with the 2000 & 2001 Birth-years, helping lead both teams to playoff appearances and a regular season AYHL Championship.
The next three years Perrella worked with Coach Fritz at the Bantam levels, helping lead the 2002’s to the AYHL playoffs and SE Districts. Pedro spent the last three seasons as a TM Head Coach, and his time learning from other top coaches in the area paid off. He took over for a team that was 12-30-6 in its previous season. With Coach Perralla at the helm the 2005’s improved to a .500 season highlighted by a very strong showing at the world-famous Quebec Peewee Tournament. Coach Pedro hopes to build on his Quebec success this year in his second season behind the bench with the 2008’s.
“Coach Perrella is a great example to all the kids that play here at Team Maryland. He paid his dues and worked his way up from the bottom, spending years as an assistant coach. If you put in enough humble hard work, your efforts are bound to yield fruit. I’m delighted that our young men have been able to see all the work that Pedro puts into his craft, and now we are all sharing in his success.” Hockey Director Chris Ceransky
In addition, Coach Perrella has served as a Head Coach for the DC Selects AAA Spring Program and is a lead skills instructor for local area camps. Coach Pedro played hockey locally in Frederick before playing Tier-1 AAA Hockey for 4 years for WLC and MYHA. After youth hockey, Perrella went on to play Junior Hockey for Frederick Freeze leading the team in all scoring categories until injuries derailed his playing career. Coach Perrella would later go to play ACHA Hockey for the University of Maryland.
“It is a privilege to be back with TM for another season, specifically with this 2008 group. I’m excited to build on the growth & development the 08’s saw last year and to continue our journey towards the Peewee Quebec World Championships! This off season I have had more time than usual to reflect upon last year and to think about my development plan for this upcoming year and I cannot wait to get started. Every season is a journey and I am thrilled to meet the young athletes who will be embarking on this journey with me and to see our TM family come together to accomplish big things,” Coach Pedro Perrella.
Pedro holds a Master’s in education with a concentration in K-12 Physical Education and is currently finishing his first full year as a teacher.
I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to work with Coach Bazzone more and more over the last two seasons. He’s earned my respect the hard way, through good old-fashioned hard work and morals.
Coach Mike Bazzone is entering his third season as a Head Coach with Team Maryland. With his new position as Head Coach of the 2009’s, Mike is the only TM coach to have worked at all three youth levels (Pee-wee, Bantam, and Midget). In his first season he led the Bantam Majors (2004’s) to the AYHL Playoffs and SE District Championship Tournament. In his second season Coach Bazzone was the Head Coach of our 18U Elite team. 2019-20 was the first season we ever had a second 18U team which was very important to the development ladder we are fostering here. Thanks to Coach Bazzone’s efforts we will be able to offer the 18U Elite experience for years to come.
Coach Mike served as the skills instructor for Pro Intensity Hockey from 2011-2014 where he oversaw player development for the Prince William Hockey Club. Mike also served as club goalie instructor for the NOVA Ice Dogs and Skills Instructor for the NOVA Ice Dogs girls’ program.
In 2014 Bazzone began running training programs independently. Over the last few years, he has built a strong following which lead to him opening his own facility. Mike is the owner/operator of HockeyCore Training Facility located on the second floor of the Rockville Ice Arena where he trains local players of all levels including countless Team Maryland players.
“I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to work with Coach Bazzone more and more over the last two seasons. He’s earned my respect the hard way, through good old-fashioned hard work and morals. Its been a pleasure watching him grow as a head coach. He has a real knack for skill development and connecting with his players. That’s exactly what we need in our Pee-wee coaches,” Hockey Director Chris Ceransky.
Throughout his time training players in the area, Mike has had the opportunity to develop players to the next level consistently. Coach Bazzone is a proud husband and father of five.
“I’m beyond excited to be coaching the Pee-wee level next season. The chance to coach our newest crop of TM players is an honor I don’t take lightly. I can’t wait to see them pull a Team Maryland jersey over their head for the first time! Together we are going to learn a lot while molding a highly competitive and motivated team. I’m eager to introduce these players to Tier 1 hockey and teach them what it means to be a part of this club. I hope everyone is as enthusiastic about our return to hockey as I am,” Coach Mike Bazzone.
Good luck in the upcoming season Gentlemen! Be sure visit or social media and website on Monday for the official Bantam Head Coaches announcement.
