A Message from the Executive Director

By TM Staff, 03/26/20, 4:30AM EDT

To Prospective Team Maryland Families and Hockey Community,

First and most importantly, I want to express that I hope all of you are safe and healthy during the COVID-19 Pandemic.  We are in unprecedented times and we know how important hockey is to all our families.  With the situation changing daily, I certainly don’t have all the answers, but I want to share what information I do have.

As you all can imagine USA Hockey is in uncharted territory.  The latest communication we received from USA Hockey is they would leave Tryouts up to each individual affiliate.  Team Maryland has been in continued communication with our local affiliate, PVAHA, and the Washington Little Capitals.  We are all committed to doing what is right, best, and safe for our players.

The situation is constantly evolving but here are things that we do know:

  • PVAHA and USAH Player Development Tryouts for 2006-2003 birth-years have been canceled.
  • Tier 1 Tryouts are postponed indefinitely.  As a member of the PVAHA Affiliate Board, we will continue to monitor the current health environment and as soon as decisions are made, I will let you know.  An official and more detailed statement from PVAHA available online at
  • All our current programming is still suspended.  The current understanding amongst all parties is that whenever rinks are safe to open, tryouts won’t happen day 1.  The thought process is to give all kids a chance to shake the rust off and get on the ice a few times before tryouts.  TM plans to make up our tune up clinics and will keep everyone posted.

Some Team Maryland news:

We are sad to say goodbye to two of our coaches, Shawn Grant and Mike Fransen.

Shawn has spent three seasons as a Head Coach for Team Maryland at the U18 and Bantam Major levels.  Shawn has recently been named the Hockey Director for the Howard Huskies program and we wish him the best of luck!

Mike Fransen has spent four seasons as a Head for Team Maryland.  This past year he guided our 2007 Peewee Majors to an AYHL Championship.  In previous seasons he’s lead our 2002 group to SE District championships and USAH Nationals Appearance.  Mike was recently hired full-time at Edward Jones, we wish him well and will miss him at the rink.

Team Maryland takes immense pride in the professionalism and talents of our coaching staff.  We strive to have one of the top coaching lineups in the country.  Mike and Shawn were an important piece of that.

We are excited to announce the addition of Russell Smith to our coaching lineup.  Russell has spent nine years as the Hockey Director of the Tri City Eagles.  Russell grew up here in Maryland and played Div-III College Hockey at Elmira College and 4 seasons of professional hockey before settling back down in Maryland.  Russell is a known commodity as a high-end skills coach and is the owner and operator of Dedicated Hockey.  Please help us welcome Russell to the Team Maryland family.

U18 Elite: TBA

U16 Premier: Tony Horacek
